2021
  • 01/21 | Ferret Update (Home, Unfortunate Events)
I am sure he is fine and is being well cared for by G-d our father who loves all his creation - please don't be sad

  • 01/19 | Don’t startle Lola while she’s driving (Work) (Is it just me?, Laine man, morning commute, winter driving)
  • 01/18 | picky mantel (Celebrations) (decorating, holidays, valentine's day)
  • 01/14 | resolution (What Are You Doing?) (Be positive, Ditch the dye, Grombre, Make it fashion, Month 13, Silver Sisters)
  • 01/13 | Sweet routine (What Are You Doing?) (dog walks)
  • 01/06 | out with the old (Celebrations, Family, What Are You Doing?) (decade in review, updates)
The last decade went by quickly, except when it didn't.

  • 01/05 | happy nuu-nuu! (Family, What Are You Doing?) (updates)
I need to be able to think out loud, not just craft my online persona, and I need to stop associating the value of my thoughts with likes and shares.

  • 12/28 | Ferret Chase (Unfortunate Events) (dog walks, encounters, silliness)
golden retriever on a sunny day
2019
  • 12/24 | 2018 Recap II (Home, Travel, Work) (allie, bowie, new mexico, recap)
  • 01/03 | 2018 Recap (Uncategorized) (job, recap)
2016
  • 02/29 | Casting for podcasts
Here's what I'm listening to now. Recommendations welcome.
  • 01/24 | You know Dasher and Dancer
Not another Potter post, but another Christmas-themed post about Mike. Because he won a dance contest and I can't not tell you about it.
  • 01/12 | Platform 9 3/4 (Christmas)
Driving blind in a snow squall is real, and it's terrifying. So here's a gif of Mike running.
  • 01/09 | Happy NuuNuu! (Christmas)
Thanks so much to Mom and Tito and Tita and Uncles for helping us with the trip. It was a million times better than we could have imagined.

  • 12/26 | 2014 Christmas Card – Extended Version (Christmas)
Captions we didn't include, Pictures we didn't print, News we didn't broadcast.
  • 12/24 | How to read our Christmas card
I know. It's not very updatey.
  • 03/22 | morning routines
When the cat is a morning person and the child is not, use math to determine the best time to start waking up the child.

  • 03/20 | …and they’re off!
  • 03/18 | Update (Family, What Are You Doing?) (american idiot, dissertation, green day, lent, minimike, obsessions, reign, spring, the sing-off, theatre, tv, updates, vitiligo)
Here's what we've been up to. I have a couple of drafts going on some of these but in the likelihood I never get around to finishing them I'll just summarize them here.

  • 01/31 | Cosplay and the Giant Dorito
This took a couple of months of planning, and while there are more traditional mother-daughter bonding activities, this was a great opportunity for me to see what she's into, and realize how very far out of touch I am with youth culture.
  • 01/31 | Poncho
Bella is very patient and optimistic that something good will happen if she cooperates with the bizarre manipulations and contortions required to put on a dog sweater.
    sunset
  • 01/29 | golluminem hates tomatoes
"Even the word 'tomato' sounds like it tastes bad!" This from a kid who takes everything with a side of ketchup.
    sunset
  • 01/24 | Review: Mad About the Boy
If Bridget Jones were a real girl we’d be such good friends. We’d entertain each other with stories about stupid things we said that day and we’d commiserate over egomaniacal bosses and smug faux friends and Vile Richards.

  • 01/19 | the fall (Unfortunate Events) (dissertation, dog walks, injury, insult, trucker travis, walking, winter)
On the way home I could not help think that if this were Texas, a dozen guys in boots and hats would have come out of the shadows to help me up. They'd dust off my hat and give Bella a rawhide treat while I composed myself.

  • 01/01 | Draw something…resembling anything!
Happy Nuunuu! I've turned the page of a new year with a little bit of wisdom from When Harry Met Sally.
2013
  • 12/30 | The friendly beasts
  • 12/26 | Christmas recap
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in the hopes that they would be stuffed with Twix Santas.
  • 12/18 | Christmas marginalia
Minime dutifully, albeit reluctantly, sat through Minimike's Christmas pageant rehearsals, and to cheer her up, doodled her own interpretation of the Christmas story.
  • 08/19 | Brave (Family) (motherhood, new experiences, Sara Bareilles, school, songs, uncertainty)
You can be amazing You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug You can be the outcast Or be the backlash of somebody’s lack of love Or you can start speaking up

  • 07/20 | tiny plastic shoe party trick
Moving 2500 miles away was so much easier than moving two miles away.

  • 06/30 | The Sunday Song
These are the things that you don’t know when you are newly married. Mike and I dated for years but never spent Sunday mornings together. He didn’t know. How could he possibly have known?
    sunset
  • 06/10 | A Hint of TARDIS (Family, Home) (diy, dr who, handmade, minime, school dance, sewing, tardis)
I worried that my Minime’s dress would not read as the Audrey Hepburn vision I pictured in comparison to the strapless/corseted/sequined/tulle confections that kept popping up online. Would people understand?
  • 05/14 | May reverie
Nobody puts rêveurs in a corner.
  • 05/02 | Thrift Therapy
She got called “Lil’ Feller” a lot but I didn’t care about gender confusion. I cared more about being able to grab her by the straps quickly to prevent her from running away, falling, climbing too high, crawling into a mine, and approaching wild beasts.
  • 04/14 | hoops and dreams
I’ve been experimenting with the timer-interval on my camera for my Rêveur self-portraits but I am usually in a hurry so framing is a challenge. This month it looks like the background to a public service announcement, or an internet meme. Any suggestions?
  • 03/22 | kumakun (Family, Travel) (cousins, kumakun, nephew)
My Little Bear, my Toto Kumakun, I love him so.
  • 03/20 | Tee me, Game of Thrones
  • 03/17 | sidetracked
Sitting through sermons can be demanding on kids, especially when parents insist they pay attention.
  • 03/15 | They’re on!
    Here we go again!

  • 03/13 | March Reverie

  • 02/13 | always check

  • 02/12 | tardis meltdown
Minime, bless her heart, was raised to believe that anything can be customized to whatever she's into at the moment.

  • 01/20 | offline days
This year the stars aligned in such a way that if I did not take an offline day I would have had to run my car into a tree to get some bloody relief from what I can only refer to as stuff and nonsense.

  • 07/14 | Baile en un Salon
  • 07/12 | Hola Sevilla
Dear Minis: Hola and welcome to Sevilla! Enjoy this small tour of my week here.
  • 06/30 | Cousin Camp XIII
Think thirteen is an unlucky number? Not for us.
  • 02/05 | Did the Titanic get cable? (Home) (minis, movies)
Minime has been on a classic movies tear lately because she had been hearing references to old movies from her friends and on TV. Of course I'm talking about such classics as Jurassic Park, ET, and Titanic. Feel old yet?
  • 01/03 | Review: Breadcrumbs
The vocabulary and concepts are easy enough for my third grader to read by herself but she thought that some parts were too sad to read alone.
  • 01/02 | stuck
If the Fire Department can rescue a cat from a tree, would it be such a stretch to rescue a favorite toy?
  • 01/02 | New Year’s Day
Looking forward to a return to routine – namely, sit-down dinners and an end to grazing at the island.

  • 11/21 | Response to “The Twi-moms’ Lament”
The media loves to identify the affects of entertainment and marketing on impressionable young girls. They especially like to admonish moms for not doing a better job of navigating their daughters through negative influences.
  • 10/16 | apples and envy
I envy New Zealand. I want to go to there.* They grow Sonya apples, and, apparently, an apple called "Envy," which I bet I could love as much as the Sonya.
  • 10/02 | when September ends
Minimike created a little newscast of her experience. To emphasize her hard-hitting-reporter persona, she picked "b-b-b-b-bad to the bone" as her theme song.
  • 08/17 | age of enlightenment (Family) (minime, minis, parenting, summer camp, zombie dog)
Can I take credit? Can I say that Minime transferred the glums to "Little Depressed Crochet Emo Doll?" I wish. But the credit really belongs to Zombie Dog.
  • 08/15 | Mouse
I stationed Bella by the breakfast nook and told her to watch for the mouse while I went to the basement to get a broom. She gave me her very best, “I’m listening” look.
  • 08/09 | invalid
As a reward for finally passing my qualifying exams I had wrist surgery to remove a harmless but marble-sized ganglion cyst that has sat upon my wrist like a tiny bald gargoyle since Clinton's first presidential term. So here is a view of the gimpy arm and the splint I'm expected to wear for the remainder of the summer.
  • 08/04 | drivin’ me bats
Mike did say that although the Minis were terrified they did exactly as they were told and even went into the basement to get a broom while Mike kept an eye on the bat. My brave, brave Minis. They rarely go into the basement alone.
How cute is this print? Sold by ATWHIM on etsy.
  • 07/28 | summer bailouts
For anyone, especially kid with anxieties about the dark, the worst place to be when the lights go out is in the shower. Am I right?
  • 07/19 | creepy wax asylum
It's been so long since I took these pictures that I must rely on my faulty memory to recall where we went sightseeing on this summer's Houston trip.
  • 06/20 | summer turns me upside down*
Minimike is and has always been much more decisive then me (or Minime, for that matter). She can choose without wondering about the road not taken.
  • 06/09 | peek and tut
After a few days they started to look like Christopher Lloyd, with white tufts of hair and their beaks agape. After a few more days they just looked bored and uncomfortable and squished. And then they were gone.
  • 06/02 | mini retreat
I don't think they have Mike's kinds of camps around here. I think they have them in Montana and they're called "communes" and their folk have lots of hair and don't recognize the federal government.
  • 06/02 | Memorial Day and Adoption Day
    Cav can haz cheezburger hat!
    Cav can haz cheezburger hat
  • 06/01 | Rude Iguana
If I had an imaginary band, which I do, and I had an imaginary hit song, which I do, I think we would have performed that song for our imaginary fans at our imaginary little dive, the "Rude Iguana."
  • 06/01 | semester over, yarn over
If this were the CSI lab you could zoom in on my reflection in bigger sackboy’s right eye and miraculously interpolate enough pixels to see that I just got back from getting a trim and blowdry.
  • 04/24 | scrambled Easter
With all nine of us sharing one pew, it was harder to sway during that late-1960's classic folk song about Easter People.
  • 04/23 | Busy in Philly
We decided to do a little photo shoot while Mike and Minime went back to the car to get the girls' hooded vests. Grandmommy is the one who pointed out that BusyMike should stand in front of the exhibition sign.
  • 04/03 | Mini Theology: Edith’s Garden
Last week we asked Minimike what she learned in Sunday School, and she answered, "We talked about Edith's Garden."
  • 04/03 | Anthropologie-inspired duvet cover

  • 03/19 | Lola Soup
When shopping for the ingredients for Lola Soup it will save the checker time and trouble of identifying Bok Choy if you remember that the PLU is 4545.

  • 03/19 | Tita Fely’s lumpia
Even though the Titas said I should call The Number, none of the Titas offered me The Number. They were just going to call it for me.
  • 03/13 | the dark lord will be very disappointed
In my dream, my professor's voice turned into Severus Snape's voice, full of disdain and contempt.
  • 02/21 | Best in Show
  • 02/06 | spectacle
  • 02/05 | favorite sound
No updates, just this daily post exercise. Featured image: the creepy Dali-esque scissors from "Dead Again" (1991)
  • 01/20 | Top Chef All-Stars – Restaurant Wars
Hello, Zen Dale. Goodbye, Foamy Marcel.
  • 01/18 | Snow Days
Bella, being the most optimistic dog in the entire universe, took to her second most favorite snow activity, wallowing. I don’t know – maybe it felt good, like a really cold backscratch. Also, the snow is pink because someone knocked gatorade off the bleachers and not because The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.
  • 01/06 | prognosticator
Not all Asian prophecies are worthwhile. Remember the Fortune Cookie of 2007?
  • 01/04 | Never say “No” to Panda
  • 01/03 | Christmas morning
Three minute-long home movies: "Can I borrow that?" "Head Bob" and "Oh, my iPod." Happy Nuunuu!

Okaasan also says my bicycle is missing. Nuts. Just when I was starting to look forward to falling with it again.
