My friend/roomie from school this past year is pregnant with her first kiddo, due at the end of May. It’s been so amazing watching her deal with school and commuting and stressing over her clothes not fitting. (“amateur!” I sniff. “Until you’re resorting to Men’s XXL sweats I’d say you’re doing okay.”)
I thought it would be a mess trying to host a shower from out-of-town but it was actually pretty easy. Another classmate offered her apartment, others brought food, I did decorations and invitations. Hence the diaper cake.
I was really nervous about making it because there are so many pretty ones online and very few instructions for this style. Most instructions involve rolling up individual diapers with rubber bands. It uses less diapers but then the recipient has to unroll all those diapers, thankyouverymuch. Layering the diapers into a cake form seems to defy physics but it’s totally possible. I put the “recipe” on Flickr except for the how-to, as I can’t explain how to roll the diapers around the spool.
My friend was very pleased. Her culture doesn’t have celebrations until after the baby is born. She’d never seen a diaper cake before, so this photo is making its way around Dubai this week so she can show her family.
